For people living with FOP, any injury to muscles, including the poke of a needle, can cause a flare-up, resulting in bone growth. To prevent this, the vaccine has to be given subcutaneously (under the skin). For those living with FOP, maintaining independence becomes more challenging as range of motion progressively diminishes. Many members of the FOP community buy and make adaptive tools such as extended straws and brushes, reachers, and clothing with magnets instead of buttons. Some use an assistance dog to carry out simple, everyday tasks like picking up objects or turning on the lights. Not only are assistance dogs practical helpers, but they are also a source of comfort and friendship. For some living with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), bone can replace muscles in the head, face and mouth, which locks their jaws. If this happens, only a small opening is left...and sometimes no opening at all...making eating and speaking extremely difficult.
